Naan is a round flatbread made of white flour, which is a staple food in Southeast and Central Asia. Naan is made of wheat flour and is almost always round. Naan dough is usually leavened with yeast before it is cooked. Once the bread has been cooked, it is typically brushed with ghee, a kind of butter, and then served hot.
Naan Bread
(makes 4 pieces – serves 2 persons)
Ingredients
1 teaspoon dry yeast1 teaspoon demerara sugar (brown)200g plain flour¼ teaspoon salt½ teaspoon baking powder1 tablespoon vegetable oil2 tablespoon natural yogurt (30ml)2 tablespoon milk (30ml) Method

Mix yeast with 1 tablespon water and 1 teaspoon sugar. Leave it in a warm place for at least 5 minutes until yeast is covered with froth.

Mix the flour, salt and baking powder in a large bowl. Then add vegetable oil, yogurt, milk and yeast. Mix well. Knead the mixture by pressing your knuckles repeatedly into the dough until you have a soft dough (5-6minutes).

Cover the bowl with a damp towel to let the dough rise. This should take about about 10 to 15 minutes.

Preheat the Oven to 140 deg C.

Shape the dough: When the dough is ready, it will be slightly spongy and springy. Dust some flour over a clean wide surface. Divide the dough into 4 equally sized balls. With your hands or rolling pin, roll each into oval shape about ½ cm or ¼ inch thick.

Grease a backing tray and place the dough on it. Bake for about 10 to 15 minutes. When ready is should be light golden, soft and crumpy.
