Seasonal Fruits

Malaysian seasonal fruits are tropical fruits that are available once or twice a year. Many tropical seasonal fruits are normally available duirng the months of June to August. The harvesting of fruit is very much affected by the weather - dry and wet season. You can buy these fruits during the seasons along road side stalls, at markets, fruit shops and supermarkets.

Cempedak 

Cempedak is eaten fresh or deep-fried with batter to make kueh – goreng cempedak. It is widely grown in the state of Kedah and Perak.  [July-August].

Dokong

Dokong refers to several similar species including dokong (Kedah), langsat, duku (Johor) and duku langsat (Terengganu). The fruit is the size of large marbles (25-35 mm diameter) and flesh is translucent and can taste slightly sour to very sweet.

Durian

The durian is believed to have originated from the Malay Archipelago. It is and exotic football-sized fruit know as the ‘king of fruits’ and enjoys a huge comsumer demand in Malaysia and Singapore. However, the pungent smell can only be appreciated by Asians. Durian is cultivated mainly in Perak, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan dan Pahang.

     Durians are eaten fresh, one or two days once it falls from the tree. The fruit is also made into durian kueh, a sweet Malaysian cake, which can be preserved, or used to flavour ice creams and other food. [April-July or June to September]

Mangoes

The mango is one of the most popular fruit that is sold commercially and also grown in many homes in Malaysia. The ripe fruit is green to yellow or reddish and the flesh is pale yellow to orangish in colour. There are many varieties of the fruit grown locally, the popular variety such as the harumanis, apple mango and mahe is popularly grown in Perak, Perlis and Kedah. It is consumed fresh and served as a dessert (pudding). The unripe fruit is put in rojak or can be made into pickles. It is also processed into juices and flavour many other food.  [May-Sept].

Mangosteen

Mangosteen is about the size of a tennis ball and dark purple when ripe. The sweet and slightly sour taste of the white flesh inside is very unique.  [May-Oct]

Rambutan

Rambutan is the size of ping-pong balls. The sweet fruit inside the hairy exterior is white and very sweet. It is sold in volume by weight In Malaysia, it is widely grown in the states of Kedah, Perak, Kelantan [May-July and Dec-Jan]

Sapodilla

(ciku)

Sapodilla or ciku (manilkara zapota) looks like the kiwi fruit on the outside but the inside is brownish, soft and sweet [Feb, July-August].
